A bearing rarely fails without warning. Long before a shaft seizes, it tends to tell you — through heat, sound, vibration, and wear patterns that most maintenance teams notice only in hindsight. Catching these signs early is often the difference between a scheduled bearing swap and an unplanned line stop that can run into hours of lost production.
1. Unusual heat at the bearing housing A bearing running hotter than its neighbours, or hotter than its own typical operating range, often points to lubrication breakdown or misalignment. In three-shift operations across Maharashtra and Gujarat's industrial belts, this is one of the earliest signs maintenance teams tend to overlook simply because equipment run warm anyway.
2. Increased vibration A shift in vibration pattern — even a subtle one — usually means internal bearing damage hasal ready started, whether from fatigue, contamination, or improper fit. Where a healthy bearing runs quietly and predictably, a failing one tends to introduce vibration that spreads to connected components, accelerating wear elsewhere on the line.
3. Unfamiliar noise Grinding, clicking, or a persistent whine at the bearing location is rarely cosmetic. It generally indicates surface damage to the raceway or rolling elements that lubrication alone won't resolve.
4. Visible lubricant discoloration or contamination Grease that's turned dark, gritty, or watery is often carrying metal particles from internal wear, or has been compromised by moisture or process contaminants — common in coastal and monsoon-affected plants across Navi Mumbai and the port belt.
5. Play or looseness in the shaft Any detectable radial or axial play usually signals advanced wear. At this stage, replacement — not further monitoring — is typically the safer call.
At Millstores, we don't just supply SKF bearings — we help plants catch these signs before they become downtime. Our condition monitoring and technical support teams work with maintenance teams across Mumbai, Bharuch, Panvel, and Nagpur to build inspection routines that catch bearing wear early, consistently.
